A PROJECT BY TIM BUENDÍA

A tombstone
for Melquíades.

A fictional character from One Hundred Years of Solitude became part of the physical landscape of Aracataca.

THE IDEA

A meeting of fiction and place.

Tim imagined a symbolic tombstone for Melquíades in the town that helped inspire Macondo.

The project called on local relationships and practical collaboration. Yolanda Marcos, priest Mario Castaño and artist Guillermo Busse helped bring the idea into being.

The result gave readers and residents a place to encounter the character beyond the page.

OVER THE YEARS

A place the town kept.

The monument’s story continued as the town changed around it.

When a new road affected its location, the tombstone was moved and rebuilt with help from Heriberto Ropero and el Profe Maya.

It became part of visits and cultural gatherings connecting the imagined Macondo with the real Aracataca.
